Popping the question is monumental life altering and unforgettable
It’s important to keep proper marriage proposal etiquette in mind when you’re planning to do something as important as proposing to your gorgeous girlfriend. This is the moment she’s been dreaming of all her life, so you want it to be as memorable and special as possible.
Before your big marriage proposal, you’re sure to be nervous, and wonder if you’re doing it in the right way. So, before you get down on one knee, read our dos and don’ts from the experts.
This week we’re talking about the Do’s of proposing and next week we’re tackle the Dont’s.
Do talk about marriage
Before you propose it’s a good idea to suss out the possibility of getting married. Make sure it’s something that you both want as the last thing you would want is an I’ll have to think about it or even worse a no.
Do be prepared
Saying, “Will you marry me?” is a huge deal, and one that leaves many proposers completely tongue-tied. Make sure you speak from your heart and tell her all the reasons why you want her to be your wife. And don’t forget to be confident by memorising and practicing your speech.
Do pick a great ring
Since wearing an engagement ring is a lifetime commitment, make sure it’s the right style. You might find an opportunity to window shop for rings when you are walking past a store, or bring it up in conversation. You can also ask her mother or best friend to help choose the ring. Checkout our engagement ring guide on what style suits what type of personality and everything you need to know in-between.
Do you know if she wants to pick her own ring?
Most brides want their proposal to include an engagement ring, but others are very particular about the ring they desire, and if this is the case then you could propose and go shopping the next day for the ring of her dreams. The only issue with this option is that she’ll see the cost so be careful to talk finances away from prying ears.
Do talk to her parents first
It’s still traditional to inform her parents of the proposal so they will feel included in the process. If you are worried about their ability to keep a secret, wait until the day before to tell them. If your girlfriend is someone who puts a lot of value on family and tradition, then asking her father is an absolute must. She’ll love the gesture and the father will be flattered.
Do contact The Proposers
If you are unsure of how to propose and need some inspiration then The Proposers can work with you to create a proposal which is completely tailored to your relationship and something your girlfriend will remember forever. email@example.com
Do go down on bended knee
It’s not 1950, but there is something so charming and romantic about a man on one knee asking the love of his life to marry him. Even if you’re not a traditional guy, it will add to the seriousness and lovingness of the proposal.
Do share the news
Take a moment to celebrate just the two of you, and then make sure you contact your family to tell them the good news. Be careful about updating social media before you tell your close friends and family as you wouldn’t want to upset anyone before you had a chance to tell them.
