How much should you spend on an engagement ring?

28th February '13

Ah, the age old question: how much should I spent on an engagement ring? There’s no doubt about it, it’s a toughie. Most people will advise you to spend two months salary on an engagement ring but we disagree. Every relationship, like every ring is different so it’s more about working out who your girlfriend is and what she would like, rather than how much money you have spent on a piece on bling.

So, fear not. The Proposers (aka your engagement experts!) are here to help you solve it. So, ask yourself the following questions in order to ascertain how much dosh to splash!

Is bigger better?

Does she think bigger is better? Is she the kind of girl who always hints that she wants a HUGE diamond. Does she have expensive taste and is always wearing designer clothes with a large price tag?  If so, then the price and size of the diamond might be important to her.

Is she the type that rarely wears jewellery? If so, then the engagement ring might be the only piece of jewellery she will ever wear. It might be easy to think she would want something big in that case, but you couldn’t be more wrong. If she isn’t that into jewellery then stick to a simple, smaller ring.

Is she traditional? Traditional women tend to like classic styles which would suggest to us that she would be more than happy with a Tiffany setting. This sort of ring is usually a nice sized sparkling  diamond that sits up high. Don’t stress this doesn’t have to be expensive – a smaller diamond looks just as stunning as a bigger one.

What sort of rings to her friends have? If all of her friends are marching around with diamonds the size of rocks, then the likelihood is she’ll be expecting something of the same size. You know how girls compare proposal stories? They also compare rings too….so keep this in mind.

Remember the 80/20 rule. There is a nice little rule out there that helps when you have decided on your budget. It’s the 80/20 rule. In short this means 80% of the budget should go on the center stone and 20% should go towards the mounting.

Still flummoxed? Then give The Proposers a ring and we will help you with all of your engagement ring dilemmas. We will even go shopping with you to advise you on the right ring. And then, of course, we can help you come up with a fabulous proposal idea.
