Next in our Low Down on diamonds series, we’re looking at Marquise diamonds.
In this series, we go through the main diamond shapes, what makes them special, and our favourite celebrity engagement rings with them!
The name allegedly comes from Louis XIV of France. He supposedly commissioned a jeweller to make a diamond shape based on the beautiful and perfect mouth of his mistress, who was a Marquise.
As you can see, this diamond shape is very elegant and eye-catching. Its unique shape is beautifully symmetrical, whether it is set on a ring horizontally or vertically.
This shape is incredibly versatile, and makes for a stunning engagement ring whichever way it is presented. It works as a solitaire ring because the shape is so unique. It also allows for interesting opportunities for stone placement on the ring, such as with this simple yet stylish ring.
It also works well as a solitaire ring when it is placed horizontally, as you can see with this elegant ring.
It looks sophisticated as the centrepiece in a cluster engagement ring. The stunning shape is accentuated by smaller diamonds surrounding it, as you can see with this ring, where the Marquise diamond is bordered by Round Brilliant Cut stones.
Another stylish way to wear Marquise stones is by having one at the centre of a three stone ring. As you can see with this ring, it makes for a ring that is simpler than a cluster ring, but is still very elegant. This particular ring has pear shaped diamonds on either side, which really compliment the Marquise diamond.
This is a popular diamond shape for celebrity engagement rings. The first time David Beckham proposed to Victoria Beckham in 1998, he gave her this Marquise engagement ring on a yellow gold band, which cost around £65,000. Since then, she has changed the engagement ring she wears over 10 times for a huge range of different shapes, stones and colours… but this was the first!
Catherine Zeta Jones is also a fan of Marquise diamonds, as she sports an absolutely beautiful horizontal 10 carat marquise engagement ring from Michael Douglas.
