Here is the second post in our Low Down on Diamonds series, in which we go through the main diamond shapes, what makes them special, and our favourite celebrity engagement rings with them!
Princess cut diamonds are classic, but newer than round cut, with the square top shape that we see today coming into the diamond scene around the 1960s/70s.
This shape is so popular because the way it is cut minimizes visible flaws, and it is very versatile on all types of jewellery.
As you can see, this shape works perfectly on a solitaire diamond engagement ring – simple, yet very elegant, and the striking square shape of the stone is beautiful and symmetrical.
This cut is also ideal for a ring involving shoulder stones: the square shape allows the stones to sit next to each other neatly and perfectly uniform.
Another stunning way to use princess cut diamonds is with three stone rings. These are becoming increasingly popular with couples as engagement rings, because they can be seen to symbolise the past, present and future of their relationship.
This is of course a very romantic and beautiful symbol, and princess cut stones work so well here because of the way that they neatly and seamlessly fit together.
Because of all this, it’s no wonder that the Princess cut is so popular amongst celebrities! Our favourites include Hilary Duff’s from American professional hockey player Mike Comrie. This solitaire ring doesn’t need many accents or details, when the diamond is a dazzling 14 carats, and is worth a huge $1 million.
American actress Ali Larter was also presented with a beautiful princess cut diamond engagement ring, which is understated and stunning!
